ABOUT US

Michael Van Noy, DVM is the founder and president of Auburn Laboratories LLC. A veterinarian specializing in equine medicine for over 25 years, Dr. Van Noy's practice includes elite show horses, as well as dearly loved family pets. His practice, Briarwood Equine Clinic, Inc. is located in Woodside, CA.

Dr. Van Noy's interest in adaptogens began in 1993 when his wife, Joy, began using a formulation to treat migraine headaches which she had suffered from for almost twenty years. His initial skepticism disappeared when he saw the effects of the herbs on Joy. Soon he was taking the herbs himself to help maintain the demanding pace of a sole practitioner with a successful practice - as well as being the father of two young children. His personal experience with adaptogens intrigued him and he began to investigate the research that had been done internationally.

His personal curiosity lead to the discovery that adaptogens had been studied and used in horses to increase performance parameters. As he probed further into the impressive body of research which explained and defined the actions of the adaptogens, he came to realize that their application as a nutritional supplement far exceeded the possibility of increased performance. His first use of adaptogens in a horse was his wife's own horse, Promise, a mare that they had owned for several years. Nervous and high-strung, the young Thoroughbred mare was a "hard-keeper". While it was obvious that she was physically "not quite right", she was clearly not unhealthy either. Within a month of being on the adaptogens her entire appearance had changed. She had gone from a lackluster, slightly built horse to a shiny, well-muscled athlete.

Dr. Van Noy had now been personally using and studying adaptogens for almost two years. With the experience of their effects in his wife's horse, he was encouraged to use the herbs in a client's horse. The horse was being trained for upper-level 3-Day, but the gelding's performance was never what it should have been. It was obvious, despite many different approaches which encompassed changes in both training and feeding, that there was some underlying problem which was not being addressed. Eventually the horse deteriorated until he could not be hacked out quietly without tying up. At this point Dr. Van Noy was consulted and, after reviewing the history, decided to try the adaptogens on the horse.

The result was nothing short of remarkable. Within a month the gelding had made a complete turn around, regaining muscle and conditioning with no further episodes of myositis. The first preliminary horse trials he competed in after beginning on the adaptogens, he finished second with a clean, fast cross country! From there on it was smooth sailing. Within two years the gelding, competing under the name Dublin Bay, was named the Intermediate Horse of the Year for Area VI!

This extraordinary example was only the first of many. In the following years, Dr. Van Noy's use of adaptogens included recurrent myositis cases, horses recovering from surgeries, laminitis cases, and many, many horses to protect their health and performance. Now, after nearly seven years of experience with the herbs, Dr. Van Noy and his wife, Joy, are committed to bringing this improved formulation for horses to the marketplace. Ironically, this dream became possible only after they formed a friendship with one of the leading scientists in adaptogenic research - the same man who had formulated the original tonics with which they began! An agreement was reached to bring the "next generation" of adaptogenic extracts to market - and Auburn Laboratories LLC was born.
